I will try it on the A7r to see if that center performance is being limited by the sensor resolution, or if it is just the lens. Remember that the A7 is easy on lenses, so it isn’t good that the corners look so bad given that I focused at the corners for those to eliminate any field curvature (which this lens doesn’t have any). I don’t have a suitable test chart for testing at macro distances so consider this review only from a general purpose lens perspective. I have seen plenty of decent sample shots from the lens at macro distances. As a macro lens this does fine, note the MTF performance near the center of the frame, the edges will crop themselves away for macro focus distances (guessing).
A lens corrected for close focus (in this case at expense of general use). This is the definition of a true macro lens. The Tokina 90mm “Bokina” does much better as a general purpose lens and is smaller and lighter. I also have a Lester Dine variant in Nikon mount and tested it on the 3, but never posted the results because it was so bad and I wanted to verify it wasn’t just a bad sample.
To be blunt, this lens is not a good general purpose lens and no idea why it sells so high.
